Postdoctoral Embedded Systems Engineer

Ossila Limited

Location: Sheffield
Salary: £40,000 to £48,000 Depending on experience
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent
Placed On: 16th February 2026
Closes: 9th March 2026

We are looking for an experienced control systems and embedded firmware engineer to join our growing team and help us develop our C / C++ based precision scientific equipment.

The Role

At Ossila, our engineers and scientists design and build new, innovative pieces of scientific equipment. We manufacture a wide range of products in Sheffield, including thin-film coating equipment, environmental control systems, and opto-electrical testing systems. Our products are sold internationally to the renewable energy and scientific community.

Based on modern, industrial-grade C and C++ and multiple target systems, you will work on everything from developing low-level sensor interfaces and process control algorithms through to graphical interfaces for embedded applications.

Our mission is to accelerate the pace of scientific discovery in fields related to photovoltaics, batteries, organic displays, and materials science. The products that we sell include precision scientific instruments, requiring expert coding and a detailed understanding of components and control systems to maximise performance.

We have built our own development ecosystem from the ground up, based upon modern C/C++ with CMAKE and static analysis tools, and are therefore looking for someone with a passion for clean code that wants the opportunity to help grow an international business by developing product firmware with robust, clean and industrial-grade C / C++.

About You

  • You have a PhD related to embedded control systems or a master’s degree with significant industrial experience of embedded systems
  • You have experience with ADC/DAC devices and techniques, control loops, and low noise techniques.
  • You are confident with C / C++ bare metal firmware and low-level coding including byte-level peripheral interfaces, communications standards such as SPI and I2C, registry access, memory management/optimisation, and occasional assembly language.
  • You understand design verification using a combination of simulation, analysis, and test techniques.
  • You have experience with embedded displays and UI.
  • You can collaborate with other product design disciplines, such as mechanical, production, and procurement to ensure clean and successful handover of projects into production.
  • You work to develop clean, high-quality design and architecture, with an understanding of the importance of testing, documentation and a standardised, modular, maintainable style for both code and electronic designs.
  • You can demonstrate professional project planning/management and delivering projects on-time.
