About us
King’s Music Department, situated in the heart of London, is known worldwide for its innovative research across the sub-disciplines of music studies, and as a centre for internationally acclaimed composition, and performance teaching. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF2021), the Department (in a joint submission with Film Studies) was ranked 4th in the UK, with 100 per cent of research impact and research environment rated ‘world-leading’ (4*) or ‘Internationally excellent’ (3*).
We have a relatively small, selective intake of undergraduates, and one of the largest postgraduate communities in the country. We welcome students from all over the world, and teach them to engage in innovative and interdisciplinary approaches to understanding music and its experience. The Department hosts highly acclaimed lectures, conferences, seminars, workshops, performances, and colloquia open to the public, and has long-standing connections with many of London’s cultural institutions.
About the role
The Department of Music seeks to appoint a distinguished performer and performance teacher to the post of Lecturer in Performance (Academic Education Pathway) to lead our new MMus Performance specialism. Applicants must have a national and/or international profile as an active professional performer (in any musical genre), with extensive experience of teaching musical performance, and ideally of academic supervision at undergraduate and postgraduate levels; and demonstrable administrative skills. We are seeking an outstanding candidate with a demonstrated commitment to education to take up this Academic Education Pathway (AEP) post; desirably applicants would also have scholarly/research interests in performance pedagogy and/or performance as research.
The successful candidate will coordinate our new MMus Performance specialism, and teach modules in performance on our MMus and upper-level BMus programmes, including assessing end-of-year performance examinations. Administratively, they will be required to coordinate the Department’s performance tuition programme and hourly-paid research staff, and be a personal tutor for a small number of undergraduate students.
While this is primarily a teaching role, the postholder will be given every opportunity to participate in the Department’s vibrant culture of composition, performance, and intellectual inquiry. The Department values excellence in scholarship fitting to the Academic Education Pathway, which prioritises educational enquiry and innovation, and pedagogic development. This post does not require the delivery of research outputs.
The successful candidate will have relevant experience of teaching and assessment, a commitment to student learning and welfare, and an aptitude for working within an interdisciplinary framework. Applicants will be expected to have experience of curriculum development in higher education, desirably at postgraduate level.
This is an education-focussed appointment and candidates will be expected to evidence attainment and potential in teaching and learning within an HE context. Applicants without a PhD will be expected to show equivalent industry experience.
This is a part-time in-person post (0.7 FTE), and you will be offered a fixed term contract for 24 months, beginning no later than 1 August 2026.
