St Hilda’s College invites applications for the fixed-term post of Stipendiary Lecturer in Classics for one year from 1 October 2026 to cover a period of sabbatical leave for Dr Rebecca Armstrong. No salaried University post is associated with this Lectureship.

The Lecturer will be expected to provide eight contact hours of teaching each week, averaged over three eight-week terms, in a range of Latin language and literature papers for the undergraduate courses in Classics; to take part in activities related to admissions; to provide pastoral support with particular responsibility for around 12 undergraduate students; and to provide administrative support for Classics, including collation of reports for personal students, setting and marking of collections (start-of-term college exams), and liaising regularly – including over the vacations when necessary – with the other Classics tutors.

The salary for the post is £22,540 (point 1) to £23,787 (point 3) per annum (current rates) according to experience and qualifications, and membership of the USS pension scheme is offered. There is a research allowance (payable against receipts) of £330 per annum. The Lecturer will be entitled to five meals per week (either lunch or dinner) free of charge during Weeks 0 to 9 of each term, with additional out-of-term entitlements, for example during the admissions period. The Lecturer will have the use of a teaching room in College. They will be a member of the Senior Common Room at St Hilda’s College.
