Location: Radcliffe Department of Medicine, John Radcliffe Hospital, Headington, Oxford
The Radcliffe Department of Medicine (RDM) is a large, multi-disciplinary, multi-site department in Oxford whose vision is to use science to support a healthier, longer life for all. This new senior permanent post of Head of Finance and Grants has been created to provide both strategic and operational leadership within these two vital professional services across RDM, ensuring consistency, resilience and efficiency across the department.
A fully qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CIPFA), you will have a strong track record in leading, managing, motivating and developing teams of finance professionals in a complex organisation.
As a member of RDM’s Senior Leadership Team (SLT) you will help shape and deliver SLT’s strategic agenda. You will be a member of the professional services executive team, and also lead the department’s new Funding Working Group. You will lead financial planning, budgeting, forecasting and control for the department and across several operating units, providing clarity and insight where essentially required. You will advise and collaborate with senior stakeholders on complex financial and operational issues and investments, leading the finance and grants team network across the department.
Following the recent launch of RDM’s Research Strategy 2025-30, there is a key requirement to develop a Finance Strategy. Operationalising the Research Strategy will provide an opportunity to review the department’s internal structures and the provision of its professional services, including finance and grants, and design their delivery.
This is a new, challenging and broad-ranging post which offers the opportunity to make a significant contribution to a large and ambitious medical sciences department. It will require excellent skills in stakeholder engagement, strategic thinking and operational delivery. With excellent interpersonal skills, you will need to relate well to staff at all levels, and be effective in engaging them as you lead and manage change. Training and support will be provided to develop expertise in grant management if required.
This position is based primarily on the John Radcliffe Hospital site and is offered at Grade 10 on a full-time basis. There will be the opportunity to discuss a combination of onsite/remote working as appropriate to the role.
If you are interested in applying, please contact the Head of Administration and Finance, Dr Jane Sherwood (jane.sherwood@rdm.ox.ac.uk), for an informal discussion to find out more about the role.
With more details in the ‘How to Apply’ section of the job description, as part of your application you will be required to upload a CV and supporting statement that should provide evidence as to how you meet the essential criteria for the post, using examples of your skills and experience to date.
The closing date for applications is 12 noon on 13 March 2026. In-person interviews are expected to be held on 31 March 2026.
Committed to equality and valuing diversity.
