We are seeking an exceptional Director of People to advance the University’s people strategy and shape an inclusive, high‑performing culture that underpins our academic ambitions, in support of the University’s Strategy 2030.

The Role

As a member of the University Executive Group, you will provide strategic direction and expert insights across all people‑related matters. You will ensure the University’s workforce is supported, engaged and enabled to deliver excellence in teaching, research, and across technical and professional services. As a key member of the University’s senior team, you will work in partnership across faculties and professional services, contributing proactively to institutional strategy and decision‑making.

The Director of People will have overall responsibility for the HR Directorate, including HR Business Partnering, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, Learning and Development, HR Operations, and Health and Safety.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver a forward‑looking cross-institutional people strategy aligned to the University’s long‑term ambitions, including in relation to business transformation.
  • Provide confident, evidence‑based insights to the University Executive Group, ensuring people considerations are central to strategic decision‑making.
  • Build, support and develop a high‑performing HR Directorate, delivering efficient, effective and customer‑focused services.
  • Provide oversight of the University’s pay, reward and workforce strategies to attract, motivate and retain outstanding staff.
  • Advocate for equality, diversity and inclusion, fostering a culture in which people from all backgrounds can thrive.
  • Promote staff wellbeing and a healthy, safe working environment.
  • Manage and sustain relationships with recognised trade unions.

About You

You will be a credible, values‑driven professional with significant senior‑level HR experience in a large, complex organisation.

You will bring:

  • A degree‑level qualification (or equivalent) and Fellowship of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (or equivalent).
  • Proven experience shaping strategic HR practice, with the ability to influence at executive and board level.
  • A strong track record of delivering impactful people strategies and navigating complex organisational challenges.
  • A track record of delivering people-related change within a complex organisation.
  • In‑depth understanding of employment law, workforce planning and organisational change in a unionised environment.
  • Knowledge of the higher education sector and its current challenges.
  • A collaborative and inclusive approach, with a strong commitment to continuous professional development.
