This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for 12 months

The Firoz Lalji Institute for Africa (FLIA)’s role at the LSE is to strengthen LSE’s long-term commitment to placing Africa at the heart of understandings and debates about global issues. FLIA works to forge new links with African scholars and institutions and increase the visibility of Africa in the LSE’s teaching, research, and policy engagement.

FLIA currently hosts five defined and expanding programmes: the Programme for African Leadership (PfAL), the FLIA Events programme (including the annual Africa Summit), the research programme (largely focused on research in Africa), the Africa Trade Programme, and the Centre for Women, Peace and Security (WPS)

FLIA requires an experienced Institute Manager to provide cover for the current manager, who is going on maternity leave. FLIA is looking for a dynamic individual who can oversee the programmes and support the development and strategic direction of FLIA. The Institute Manager will ensure the effective operations of the Institute in terms of finances, human resources, and physical facilities. The postholder is a vital member of the FLIA’s senior leadership team, working closely with and reporting to the Institute Director. The Manager has direct responsibility for the management of the administrative team, which consists of six members of staff, including one senior programme manager and two programme managers. Over the duration of the cover, the postholder will be responsible for co-creating the five-year Institute strategy with the senior leadership team, appointing and convening the Institute’s external board with the Director, and ensuring careful budget stewardship across funding streams.

Candidates will have experience working in management, have proven line management experience of large teams, experience working closely with senior academics, stakeholders, and philanthropists, have proven organisational strategic development and implementation experience, and have managed complex budgets and forecasts. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to foster a shared sense of purpose with a diverse range of staff and stakeholders, excellent verbal and written communication skills, a collaborative mindset, and be able to think strategically. The successful candidate will have a passion for supporting work in Africa and an ability to create relationships with external and overseas partners.

We offer an occupational pension scheme, generous annual leave, hybrid working, and excellent training and development opportunities.
