Senior Research Officer - ADR Suicide

About The Role

This is a Fixed Term position until September 2027 working full-time.

This is an exciting opportunity to join the ADR Suicide Programme based at Swansea University. The postholder will manage and conduct a programme of quantitative research projects and data platform development related to suicide prevention.

We are particularly interested in receiving applications from candidates who have a desire to develop as a global mental health researcher and leader.

The appointed researcher will join the team led by Prof. Ann John with a focus on mental health and suicide and self-harm prevention. Prof. Ann John is the Swansea Principal Investigator of the National Centre for Mental Health, Swansea and of DATAMIND. She is also director of the National Centre for Suicide Prevention and Self-harm Research, and co-leads the Data and Digital theme of the Mental Health Mission. The team has a focus on translation of research into policy and practice.

You will join Prof. John’s team and work with data resources such as the Secure Anonymised Information Linkage (SAIL) Databank at Swansea University. SAIL is a research Centre of Excellence that brings together a breadth of multi-disciplinary partners through catalytic collaboration. It is a safe haven for billions of person-based records, spanning up to 20 years from the entire population of Wales, which enables researchers to answer important questions for the benefit of society. You will also work with the deeply phenotyped NCMH cohort with access to  multi-modal data (omics, imaging, medications etc)

The post-holder will have a strong background in clinical epidemiology and/or health data science and have enthusiasm and aptitude for working with mental health related data with a relevant post-graduate degree or equivalent experience. Preferably, you will be experienced in the use of large relational databases through SQL, be fluent in a programming language such as R, Stata or Python, and have knowledge of routine big data.

Welsh Language Skills

The Welsh language level required for this role is Level 1 - A little. The role holder will be able to pronounce Welsh words, answer the phone in Welsh (good morning/afternoon) and use very basic everyday words and phrases (thank you, please etc.). Level 1 can be reached by completing a 1 hour course.
