Band 10 Professor of Civil Engineering:

The School of Engineering and Technology is seeking to appoint a professor in Civil Engineering to provide academic leadership in research, teaching and industry/community engagement for a new Civil Engineering Programme. The post holder will have the responsibility to shape the academic and research direction within the subject area with a strong focus on growth of student numbers, building research capacity and developing industry/community engagement. The candidate is expected to be a leading expert in one or more subject areas in Civil Engineering and has academic leadership experiences to lead the new educational and research developments.

The role includes building a high-quality research profile in a broad range of Civil Engineering subject areas that is aligned with school’s strengths in sustainable engineering, and renewable energy, and that has practical relevance to industry.  The post holder needs to demonstrate outstanding leadership skills and will work within the subject group of Civil Engineering contributing to research and teaching in the relevant discipline.  The Professor will have a strong track record of securing external research funding from government and private sources and will be able and willing to take a strong leadership role to advance the Civil Engineering subject area in its reputation as a centre of excellence in education and research, both nationally and internationally.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities of the post

  • Lead on the development and implementation of teaching and learning strategy for the Civil Engineering programme
  • Lead on the design of inclusive and accessible learning resources, working with student support and educational design experts within and beyond the University.
  • Providing outstanding teaching using contemporary pedagogy
  • Publishing high quality articles in civil engineering areas and making significant contributions to the REF 2029 and beyond.
  • Leading external research grants applications and contributing to growth in school and faculty’s research income
  • Lead research and collaborative partnerships with external bodies, lead consultancy and enterprise activity in the civil engineering areas
  • Supervising to Master and PhD level research students in civil engineering and growing the PhD cohort.
  • Mentoring junior academic colleagues in the school
  • Strategic contribution to School objectives in relation to NSS TEF and student recruitment and retention.
  • Strategic contribution to internationalisation and partnerships.
  • Strategic contribution to the expansion of Civil Engineering in relation to the recruitment of students at all levels

Person Specification

  • A PhD in an area of Civil Engineering.
  • Demonstrated evidence of a distinguished track record of teaching expertise in a range of areas in civil engineering
  • Evidence of significant educational leadership relevant to teaching and learning in higher education
  • A distinguished international research reputation in civil engineering relevant to sustainable construction and engineering that is evidenced highly quality publications and significant competitive external grants.
  • Demonstrated excellence in the supervision of honours and research higher degree students.
  • Significant contribution to the discipline and/or profession within a wider community context at local, national and international level.
  • A demonstrated strong track record of establishing effective research collaborations with external national and international partners.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
