STATEC Research is looking for a junior researcher to join the research department of the Statistical Office of Luxembourg (STATEC). This is a full-time position based in Luxembourg. The initial appointment is for two years, with the possibility of extension. We offer an attractive salary and research allowance. Social insurance, including a pension scheme and health insurance, are included in the salary.

STATEC Research’s team of 14 economists aims to understand Luxembourg's social and economic development in a comparative perspective, and to contribute related research to the national policy debate and international scientific community. Research fields primarily include entrepreneurship, productivity, well-being.

The candidate will carry out empirical analysis and research on subjects of policy relevance with a focus on productivity and firm performance. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated to work in a policy-oriented research institution.

Main responsibilities:

  • Compile firm-level data for the measurement of productivity and firm performance in Luxembourg;
  • Conduct quantitative analysis and prepare associated reports on topics related to productivity and firm performance to provide policy-relevant evidence and insights for the Luxembourg economy as a whole;
  • Conduct research on the same topics to contribute to the international scientific community, e.g., through presentations and publications;
  • Contribute to the development of the research agenda of the organization;
  • Participate in a collaborative research environment, such as joint research projects, outreach activities, seminars, and grant proposals;
  • Establish cooperation and share knowledge with STATEC’s data production services; and
  • Disseminate research, methodological and analysis results to both scientific and wider audiences, including public officials, policy makers, statisticians.

Candidate’s profile:

  • PhD in economics;
  • Strong background in applied microeconomics and empirical quantitative methods, with an interest in policy relevant research and policy evaluation;
  • Proven experience working with firm-level datasets;
  • Previous publications, particularly in the area of productivity are an asset;
  • Strong expertise in STATA;
  • Intrinsic motivation to complete analysis and research projects;
  • Excellent organisational and interpersonal skills;
  • Ability to meet deadlines and work both as part of a team and independently; and
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English - the working language of the department.

Ideal additional qualities include knowledge of:

  • International trade, global value chains, and industrial policy;
  • Policy evaluation tools;
  • Machine learning techniques;
  • R and other programming languages; and
  • French and/or German.
