UWE Bristol is a university defined by its ambition, its place, and its impact. With a strong reputation for high-quality teaching, impactful research, and a long-standing commitment to transnational education, the University is a driving force for innovation, inclusion, and opportunity – regionally, nationally, and globally.
We are now seeking to appoint an outstanding and visionary leader as Pro Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Arts, Technology and Environment (CATE) – one of the most diverse and multifaceted academic portfolios in the UK.
This is a role of exceptional scale and breadth. The College brings together a wide range of disciplines spanning engineering, technology, environment, design, architecture, and the creative arts, delivered across multiple campuses with sector-leading facilities. From cutting-edge engineering and digital innovation to internationally recognised creative practice, the College embodies UWE Bristol’s interdisciplinary ethos and its commitment to addressing real-world challenges through collaboration, enterprise, and research. This is a unique College where the STEM areas converge with the Creative Arts disciplines in truly interdisciplinary, cross-cutting, exciting, and transformative ways.
As Pro Vice-Chancellor, you will provide strategic leadership for the College while also contributing at the highest level to the leadership of the University as a whole. Reporting to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost, and as a member of the University Executive Team, you will play a central role in shaping and delivering UWE Bristol’s Strategy 2030, leading major cross-institutional initiatives and ensuring the College is fully integrated within the wider ambitions of the University.
You will lead a large and complex academic community, with responsibility for all aspects of performance across education, research, and enterprise. This includes advancing the quality of teaching and student outcomes, strengthening an already strong research profile, and embedding innovation and external engagement across all activities. At the heart of this is an unwavering commitment to an outstanding and inclusive student experience.
The role also carries significant external engagement responsibilities. You will represent UWE Bristol across regional, national, and international networks, building partnerships with industry, the public sector, and global collaborators, and further enhancing the University’s reputation and reach. UWE Bristol’s deep roots in the region, combined with its global outlook, make this a uniquely impactful platform for leadership.
We are seeking a collaborative, values-led and emotionally intelligent leader with the credibility to operate at professorial level and a strong track record of academic leadership. You may bring experience of leading within a discipline aligned to the College’s portfolio, or a more cross-cutting leadership background – such as in education, research, or enterprise – at institutional or faculty level. What matters most is your ability to lead at scale, to navigate complexity, and to bring people together around a shared vision.
You will be an institutional leader first and foremost – someone who sees beyond organisational boundaries, fosters cross-university collaboration, and contributes meaningfully to the success of the University as a whole. You will combine strategic insight with operational delivery, and bring a strong commitment to inclusivity, innovation, and continuous improvement.
This is a rare opportunity to lead a College of remarkable breadth and capability within a university that is both ambitious and deeply connected to its communities. For a leader ready to shape the future of interdisciplinary education, research and enterprise at scale, UWE Bristol offers an exceptional platform.
