About the role:

You will be using your extensive specialist knowledge to support all instrument facilities across the Chemistry Department. You will provide specialist expert technical support to instrumentation laboratories offering a service to both internal and external users. This will include supporting facility managers and providing appropriate cover during, periods of increased work load,  holidays and sickness, commensurate with the grade, within the department of chemistry. Additionally, you will be expected to provide a ‘point of contact’ technical service for a designated area of laboratories and equipment used by students and staff during their activities, demonstrating a flexible and multidisciplinary approach.

What you would be doing:

The main duties of the post will include:

  • Support all operational aspects of facilities, instruments clusters and specialist instruments, including but not limited to: Agilent Measurement Suite (AMS), Chemical Crystallography, Mass Spectrometry, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) facility, Pulse Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (PEPR) facility, and Rapid Online Analysis of Reactions (ROAR) facility.
  • Provide cover for facilities, instruments clusters and specialist instruments during high volume periods of usage, holidays and sickness ensuring continuous flow of services and operations. This will include but is not limited to, running service samples, providing technical support for users and administrative duties for all facilities ensuring sustainability.
  • Provide expert technical support including independent training users and troubleshooting instruments throughout the department. Liaise and coordinate with directors, senior managers and specialist engineers regarding the maintenance of equipment and preparation of the facilities for showcase visits.
  • Train superusers as potential trainers for users of the research instrumentation and ensure that the training is of the highest standard. Coordinate the Health and safety systems, including risk assessment associated with instruments and explain the objectives and priorities for superusers and trainers.

What we are looking for:

These include:

  • A MSc in Chemistry with extensive experience with analytical research instrumentation.
  • Previous work experience in a relevant research instrumentation role in a HE or industrial environment.
  • Experience in using Mass Spectrometry (MS), Liquid Chromatography (LC), Gas Chromatography (GC), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Pulse Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (PEPR) and high throughput automation.
  • Membership, or working toward membership, of a relevant professional body i.e. member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC)
  • Experience in developing and delivering training materials for a range of academic levels.
  • Experience closely working with manufactures and supplies of state of the art analytical instrumentation and building and maintaining excellent relationship.
