Department

The internationally recognised Imaging and Cytometry labs within the Bioscience Technology Facility in the Department of Biology is seeking someone to act as a Deputy and Support the Head of the facility. The post will help lead the Imaging and Cytometry Lab providing expert support, experimental design, advice, training, and solution provision as well as and support the administrative aspects for the wider facility.

The Technology Facility itself has 6 core areas, Data Science, Genomics, Metabolomics and Proteomics, Imaging and Cytometry, Molecular Interactions and Biophysics and Protein Production and is currently supported by 29 staff members in its own 2000m2 purpose built space. The facility provides research support and services to both researchers from within the University as well as to external researchers from academia and industry and is recognised as providing a premier service to its 300+ users and as such, the work of the laboratory is wide and very varied. The Imaging and Cytometry Lab itself is home to over 20 high end microscopes and cytometers, and frequently helps develop and adopt new technologies. This new role will be expected to offer significant support to the current Director of the Technology Facility, as well as in the Imaging and Cytometry Lab. This will also include project collaborations and support to our academic group leaders within the Department, and help in the development of the wider facilities and attract new external users.

Main purpose of the role

To directly support and help drive forward the Imaging and Cytometry within the Technology Facility, helping to manage staff and resources to ensure its efficient organisation, operation and sustainable development. The post-holder will have a key role to play in expanding and diversifying the user base, applications training and encouraging widespread, equitable and appropriate use, ensuring that the facility remains cost-effective.

The post-holder will also act as executive support the Director of the Technology Facility and their other associated roles from an administrative perspective.

The post-holder needs to be a highly skilled researcher and technologist with extensive experience in microscopy and cytometry and proven skills in running a core facility. They will act as a research and information resource within and external to the University departments and provide appropriate guidance, training and advice to users. Collaboration with academic, research staff and external researchers on research projects, the development of innovative techniques, and building external clients base will be key features of the role as will the input into teaching where appropriate.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • PhD Degree, or equivalent with significant experience in microscopy and/or cytometry
  • Advanced microscopy skills to include super-resolution and other advanced microscopies
  • Proven experience of leading a core facility and ability to attract funds
  • Excellent verbal and written communication in both one to one and more formal presentation and the ability to negotiate and influence staff, students and external stakeholders
  • Ability to evaluate experimental data and equipment performances and redirect strategies to overcome problems
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines while maintaining defined standards
  • A positive, pragmatic and open attitude towards work
