The role

We are seeking to appoint a highly motivated Patient/Public Involvement and Engagement Officer with experience in working collaboratively with a range of non-academic partners. The successful candidate will design and deliver PPIE activities for research and implementation projects and programmes of work that have been prioritised and co-produced with local, regional and/or national stakeholders in health and social care, voluntary sector organisations, diverse communities and public contributors

The post is 80% FTE (28 hrs per week), based in the University of Bristol, and starting in April 2026 until March 2031.

This role would suit applicants who have experience in supporting meaningful and organised involvement of public members in the activities of large, multi-organisation, co-produced research programmes. The postholder will have extensive experience of working with local, regional and/or national stakeholders in health and social care, voluntary sector organisations, diverse communities and public contributors, including adults, young people and children, and demonstrate a commitment to reducing health inequalities.

The ARC operates a flexible hybrid working arrangement, with some days required in the office and some days working from home, as per the nature of duties.

What will you be doing?

  • Support Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) activities across the themes of NIHR Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) in the Southwest, working with research staff under the guidance of the PPI leads to deliver the ARC PPIE strategy.
  • Identify, support and empower members of the public, including children and young people and patients to contribute to groups, and other methods of engagement, drawing on well developed facilitation, communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Co-ordinate the People in Health West of England Young People’s Advisory Group, bringing together a group of young people from across the region to support researchers.
  • Contribute to the monitoring and evaluation of PPIE, reporting to ARC Executive and Management Groups as required
  • Produce written reports drawing on complex and confidential data as well as describing the content and recommendations of meetings
  • Ensure efficient day-to-day two-way communication with people involved in PPIE groups/activities and research staff

You should apply if

  • Recent experience in developing, supporting and facilitating public involvement and engagement activities
  • Experience in working collaboratively with non-academic partners to deliver research and implementation projects and programmes of work that have been prioritised and co-produced with local, regional and/or national stakeholders in health and social care, voluntary sector organisations, diverse communities and public contributors 
  • Ability to build effective relationships with different stakeholders, iincluding children and young people, patients and service users, members of the public, senior members of external organisations, and community and academic researchers
  • Experience of youth, community work and/or other roles, including the participation of children, young people, parent/carers and other adults.
