Cardiff University - Welsh School of Architecture - Research

Location: Cardiff
Salary: £33,951 to £36,636 per annum, pro-rata for hours worked (Grade 5)
Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 25th March 2026
Closes: 12th April 2026
Job Ref: 21255BR

The Welsh School of Architecture at Cardiff University is currently seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant to join our research team on an AHRC-funded interdisciplinary study, Designing Dying-in-Place, exploring how design can support end-of-life care in the home. The project seeks to translate the approach of ‘place of care’ and concept of ‘dying-in-place’ to architectural practice and design strategies for housing, with the goal of helping more people experience a dignified death in their own home. The project objectives are threefold: (i) to review existing research on dying-in-place, as well as cultural attitudes toward death, (ii) to gather experiences of dying at home from different cultures in Wales, through feedback from carers, and (iii) to provide insights for architects on how to design homes that better support people who want to die at home. We have palliative care expertise within the research team as well as project partners in Marie Curie (Wales), including links with its community nursing teams.

The ideal RA candidate will hold a degree in a relevant discipline or equivalent experience in a relevant subject area, such as healthcare, nursing, housing, or architecture. They will have a background in mixed-methodology research methods and techniques, with an interest in working at the intersections of architectural design, housing governance, and end of life care. The RA will need to possess strong empathic skills and an ability to work in sensitive contexts. They will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment as well as liaise with project stakeholders. We are looking for someone that is organised and able to facilitate fieldwork activities as well as help coordinate a research symposium. Prior experience of research ethics procedures and/or Patient and Public Involvement (PPI) will be a distinct advantage.
