Counselling and Psychotherapy Research

Counselling and Psychotherapy Research (CPR) is the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy’s research journal, accessible to over 75,000 BACP members and, through the journal’s publisher, Wiley, to an increasing international readership. It is an innovative international peer-reviewed journal dedicated to linking research with practice. Pluralist in theoretical and methodological orientation, the journal recognises the value of qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods strategies of inquiry and aims to promote high-quality, ethical research that informs and develops counselling and psychotherapy practice. The journal aims to ensure that research remains relevant to practice, and for practice to continue to inform research development.

Further information about the journal can be found here.

CPR’s current Editor is standing down later this year. Additionally, submissions to the journal have grown rapidly in recent years meaning that we are now seeking to support CPR’s continued growth by investing in reconfiguring and expanding the editorial team that ensures its smooth running. We are looking for an Editor-in-Chief and two Associate Editors who can continue to build the journal’s quality, impact and international reach.

Please click the 'Apply' button above for details of the principal accountabilities, selection criteria and how to apply.

The ideal candidate for the post will be motivated and highly organised, with in-depth knowledge and experience of research within counselling and psychotherapy, including a record of scholarly publications within the field. Previous editorial experience and knowledge of academic publishing is an advantage, but not essential. Additionally, successful candidates will need to demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills to support the growth of the journal through developing and fostering relationships with editorial board members, authors, reviewers and other professional contacts. Please refer to the principal accountabilities and selection criteria in each of the role profiles. Applicants may apply for more than one role in their application, but it is not expected that any one person will be offered more than one post.

The role is offered on a self-employed contract for service basis of one day per week, and it is expected that each will usually be worked over a minimum of three but preferably four or more days.

Applicants should apply by sending a supporting letter indicating how they meet criteria for their preferred role (or roles) along with a CV of no more than 2 pages, and names and email contact details of two referees. All documents to be sent via the 'Apply' button above.

Deadline for applications: 9am, Tuesday 26 May 2026.

Informal enquiries may be directed to Dr Clare Symons, Head of Research, at clare.symons@bacp.co.uk.

Interviews will be held online, week commencing 15 June 2026. Please note, a brief written task for completion prior to interview will be required.
