Job Summary

PML is seeking a highly motivated junior scientist to join our world class biogeochemistry team.  You will be a well organised individual who has experience in the operation of laboratory instrumentation.

In this role you will be responsible for the operation of equipment both at PML and importantly in the field. 

All training will be provided but you should be able to demonstrate a good understanding of marine chemistry and should be familiar with analytical methods which could include stable isotope mass spectrometry, particulate carbon and nitrogen analysis, gas chromatography and nutrient autoanalysers. 

You will be working in shared laboratories to ISO standards 45001 and 9001 and it is essential that you are familiar with health and safety and quality control procedures. 

Fieldwork is a key to the delivery of this position, and you will be expected to work for extended periods on land and ship-based expeditions for which you will need to take sea survival training. 

Your minimum qualifications/experience will be at degree level or equivalent.  Some experience in the use of statistics would prove advantageous.

Key Deliverables

  • Operate and maintain laboratory and field‑based analytical equipment.
  • Collect high‑quality marine biogeochemistry data during land and ship‑based fieldwork.
  • Follow ISO 45001 and ISO 9001 health, safety, and quality procedures.
  • Record, analyse, and report data accurately, including basic statistical interpretation.
  • Maintain organised documentation such as calibration logs, sample records, and field notes.
  • Work effectively within the team, communicating progress and equipment issues.
  • Complete required training (e.g., sea survival, lab safety, instrumentation training). 

Skills Specification

  • Qualifications: Degree level or equivalent in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Laboratory competence: Experience operating scientific instruments and following quality control procedures.
  • Scientific understanding: Good foundation in marine chemistry and familiarity with analytical methods.
  • Fieldwork readiness: Willingness and capability to work on land and at sea, including completing sea survival training.
  • Health & safety awareness: Comfortable working to ISO 45001 and 9001 standards.
  • Organisation & teamwork: Well organised, reliable, and able to work effectively in shared lab environments.
  • Technical skills: Competent with basic IT tools; some statistical knowledge is beneficial.
