INTRODUCTION

AFG College with the University of Aberdeen is an established and exciting higher education partnership forged in 2017. The partnership has created the first UK University in the State of Qatar offering mainstream degrees outside of Qatar Foundation. We celebrated our first cohort of graduates in 2019 and have seen significant growth in student numbers. We are committed to supporting the Aberdeen 2040 agenda https://www.abdn.ac.uk/2040/ in addition to the Qatar National Vision 2030.

With over 528 years of history, the ‘ancient’ University of Aberdeen is among the world’s leading higher educational institutions consistently ranked within the top 250 universities in the world. In 2024 the University of Aberdeen has been named within the top 10 universities in the UK and top 50 in the world in the new Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. With ambitious growth plans for the future, AFG College with the University of Aberdeen is looking to recruit committed academic professionals who are seeking new opportunities within the international higher education sector.

Currently there are over 600 students studying at our Qatar campus with over 1400 successful graduates now applying their skills within the public and private sectors in Qatar and the wider region. To accommodate the growth in our student numbers, plans are underway to build a new larger campus. This new campus will allow for further expansion in student numbers, degree offerings and research. These are particularly exciting times for both the College and the University and the wider higher education sector in Qatar.

The University of Aberdeen’s School of Law is an ambitious School with a long history of high-quality teaching and research. The school regularly ranks in the Top 10 UK Law Schools and seeks to support AFG College in its aim to offer a quality British education in Qatar.

AFG College wishes to appoint a full-time Lecturer/ Senior Lecturer in order to augment our teaching capacity within the fields of Public Law, International Law and Energy Law. We will particularly welcome applications from candidates with expertise in one or more of these subject areas.

JOB DESCRIPTION

MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

  • You will work with AFG College with University of Aberdeen faculty and Programme Leader/s to deliver the law curriculum to both undergraduate and post graduate students.
  • You will have responsibility for the assurance and enhancement of the University’s academic standards within the course(s).
  • You will develop and deliver an outstanding student experience across the course(s).
  • You may be asked to take on additional academic roles as part of your wider academic role.

OVERVIEW OF KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • To contribute to the development, organisation and day to day management and delivery of courses, ensuring its relevance, currency, coherence, attractiveness and distinctiveness to students and employers.
  • To contribute to new programme and / or course development, as introduced from time to time.
  • To produce course information as required, including but not exclusively, lesson plans, course evaluation reports, peer to peer observation.
  • To be responsible for the development, enhancement, preparation and delivery of teaching, learning, assessment and feedback across a range of course(s).
  • To be responsible for the development and implementation of innovative practice in teaching, learning, assessment and feedback across the course(s).
  • To ensure that teaching on the course(s) is informed by contemporary research and scholarship.
  • In collaboration with the appointed University Course Coordinator, set, mark and moderate coursework, assignments and examinations.
  • To contribute to an outstanding student experience in line with AFG College with the University of Aberdeen strategies.
  • Ensure that academic quality assurance standards are met and applied consistently across the course(s).
  • To participate in professional development in support of academic leadership, teaching, research and enterprise.
  • To work within a framework of effective governance, ensuring compliance with AFG College with the University of Aberdeen policies and procedures, including Data Protection, Health and Safety, and Aberdeen University and the Qatar Ministry of Education and Higher Education quality assurance procedures.

CANDIDATE BACKGROUND

Applications are welcomed from candidates at any point on the Lecturer scale, including Lecturers and Senior Lecturers.

Applicants will have a postgraduate qualification in Law, ideally a PhD with a record of research appropriate to the level of the role. Professionals who do not possess a PhD but hold a relevant master’s degree and significant professional experience are encouraged to apply. Applicants will need to evidence scholarship and/or professional engagement, interaction, and activities related to their field of teaching.

Applicants will have a track record of university teaching and learning and/or experience of training, educating and mentoring the development of others. Ideally candidates will have a teaching qualification, a recognition of the HEA or be willing to work towards their membership of a relevant Higher Education Professional Body.

Transnational education experience will be an advantage for all applicants. The ability to teach in more than one discipline-related area is essential. In addition to their teaching responsibilities, successful candidates will also be expected to participate in the administration of the programmes, actively engage with industry and in relevant scholarship activities. Knowledge of the profession and links to industry will enhance the expectation that candidates will collaborate with other research faculty within the partnership and in the wider academic community in their area of expertise.

TERMS OF APPOINTMENT

  • The appointment will be made by AFG College with the University of Aberdeen.
  • A competitive salary will be offered.
  • Any appointment will be made subject to satisfactory references and a 3-month probation period.
  • Appointments will be made based on qualifications, HE teaching & learning (T&L) experience and ability to demonstrate academic leadership in T&L, scholarship, research and administrative contribution.
  • This role is based in Qatar and as such the successful candidate will require an employer-sponsored visa in accordance with local Qatari Immigration regulations. Successful candidates relocating to Qatar will be provided with accommodation.
  • Transportation is provided to and from the provided accommodation to the campus.
  • Annual Return Air Ticket
