Location: London, Shenzhen - China
Salary: £53,947 to £63,350 per annum inclusive of London Weighting Allowance
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract

About The Role

The Faculty of Life Sciences & Medicine is seeking to appoint a lecturer with an excellent track record in Biomedical Engineering education.

We welcome applications from candidates based in the UK and internationally.

The successful candidate will be appointed by King’s College London and subsequently seconded to Shenzhen in China, where they will teach primarily on the newly established BSc Biomedical Engineering programme delivered through the SUSTech–KCL Joint Education Institute (JEI).

For candidates who require Skilled Worker visa sponsorship, the role will involve spending up to 12 months at our London campus at the start of employment. This period supports induction, training, and familiarisation with UK Higher Education processes before undertaking the secondment to Shenzhen for the remainder of the appointment.

Candidates who already hold the right to work in the UK, or who have prior experience within the UK Higher Education sector, may complete a shorter period of induction in London, with majority of the role subsequently carried out in Shenzhen, China.

The lecturer will be an enthusiastic educator with an ability to inspire the next generation of biomedical engineers, and will be expected to lead and contribute to the delivery of modules, provide academic support to students and work closely with colleagues across the JEI and the Faculty.

Successful candidates will be appointed to our Academic Education Pathway (AEP) that allows career progression to Professor based upon contribution to education and scholarship. Staff on the AEP have an indicative 20% of time available to engage in pedagogical research.

We are particularly interested in candidates able to teach undergraduates in research aspects of biomedical engineering alongside making contributions to transferable/academic skills training. Candidates with experience of teaching and/or supporting international students’ learning in these specialities are encouraged to apply.

The post holders will be accountable for quality assurance of their teaching and peer review of others to sustain and develop high quality education.  Academic citizenship through activities that underpin excellence in education is expected, including sharing best practice and learning from others.

The post holders will:

  • devote 80% of their time to education excellence.
  • develop and deliver education on our BSc Biomedical Science Joint Education Programme.
  • provide student support and undertake education-related administrative duties as directed by the Programme Lead(s) of the relevant joint programme.
  • have the potential to develop an independent research profile in pedagogical research.

Where possible, successful candidates will spend some time at King’s College London developing educational materials and methods before starting teaching duties on the SUSTech campus for a period of four years.

Post holders will receive competitive remuneration packages and benefits, including a ‘market supplement’ to their salary when based in China, subsidised accommodation in China and annual flights to and from the UK.

This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be initially offered a fixed term contract for four years.
