Faculty of Engineering

Pursue and establish an independent, high-quality research program; design and deliver a range of teaching materials. The Faculty of Engineering at the University of Strathclyde is one of the largest and most successful engineering faculties in the UK, and the largest in Scotland. As a leading international technological university, Strathclyde is recognised for its world class research, knowledge exchange and educational programs. At the heart of this is the Faculty of Engineering which boasts a growing research portfolio of over £85 million.

The Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering is the birthplace of modern engineering education, informing the technology leaders of today and tomorrow since 1800. Our mission is to advance knowledge and commerce in mechanical and aerospace engineering and apply fresh thinking to0 the challenges faced by industry and society.

The department seeks to appoint 3 Lecturers in the areas of Structural Mechanics, Dynamics, and Thermodynamics/ Combustion Energy Systems Engineering, especially in relation to H2, to provide academic support in the areas of teaching, research and knowledge exchange as part of our international engagement portfolio. You will be expected to fully engage in the Departments teaching programs, have a track record demonstrating an ability to attract research funding, produce high-quality papers for publication and develop new methods and models for engineering research.

To be considered for the role, you will be educated to a minimum of PhD level in a discipline related to Mechanical Engineering with a focus on mechanics, dynamics or thermal energy transfer and conversation processes in engineering systems. You will have experience in at least one of the following areas:

  • Mechanics, Fracture Mechanics and Fatigue
  • Dynamics of Mechanical Systems/ Drive Trains
  • Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer and Combustion.

Experience in developing new assessment/modelling methods; engineering and embedding new innovative approaches to understanding the fundamental physics of the use/application would be beneficial. The application of AI in application and interpretation of data associated with any of these research areas would be advantageous.

You will have the ability to develop and deliver new research initiatives and knowledge exchange activities, and an ability to effectively teach at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. You will be ambitious and enthusiastic about cross-disciplinary working and be able to work independently and as part of a team, supporting others and leading teams, when required. You will be an excellent networker with excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including an ability to listen, engage and persuade, and to present complex information in an understandable and accessible way to a range of audiences. You will have the ability to work well under pressure and be driven to deliver results.
