The Head of Department for Nursing and Midwifery provides academic and strategic leadership across the Department, overseeing day-to-day operations, staff development and effective change management. The role leads excellence in teaching and learning, ensures an outstanding student experience, and maintains a strong national and international programme portfolio. It is pivotal in enhancing research performance, income generation and external engagement. As part of the School’s Senior Management Team, the postholder contributes to School strategy and collaborates on departmental resourcing.
The Head of Department leads the Department to achieve excellence in education, research and student experience, fostering staff performance and professional development. The role provides strategic leadership in teaching, curriculum development, quality assurance and student outcomes, and oversees programme delivery, admissions and external engagement. It ensures strong research performance, supports income generating activity and builds professional partnerships. The postholder contributes to School and University leadership, manages budgets and resources, and models behaviours aligned with institutional values. The role is open to applicants coming from an Education or Education & Research background.
Candidates will be registered with the NMC and hold relevant academic qualifications, with substantial expertise to lead education and research. They will demonstrate significant experience in delivering excellent teaching, academic leadership, and managing teams, including performance and change management. Strong communication skills, commitment to pedagogic excellence, and engagement with the UK Professional Sta ndards Framework are essential. The role requires a commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, continuous professional development and proactive engagement with professional practice.
