ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF APPLIED MATHEMATICS 

The Department of Applied Mathematics comprises academic staff with active research in analysis of differential equations, numerical analysis and scientific computing, control theory and optimization, operational research, machine learning, probability, and related applications. The Department delivers courses for three four-year undergraduate mathematics programmes and also provides service teaching for other programmes across the University. At the postgraduate level, it offers a Ph.D programme in Mathematical Sciences as well as a master’s programme in Applied Mathematics. 

POSITION OVERVIEW 

The Department invites applications for faculty appointment in Applied Mathematics at any level. The successful candidate will demonstrate the potential to develop an active and independent research programme, as well as a strong commitment to high-quality teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Applicants from all areas of applied mathematics are encouraged to apply; however, preference will be given to those with research experience in fields with strong potential for external research grants and/or local industrial applications, such as mathematical/computational biology, inverse problems, and scientific machine learning, including statistical machine learning. 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES 

  • Conduct independent and collaborative research leading to impactful publications and funded projects.
  • Teach and design courses in mathematical sciences at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Supervise research projects of Ph.D, Master’s, and undergraduate students.
  • Engage in interdisciplinary collaborations within the University and with external partners.
  • Contribute to academic service and leadership at the departmental, faculty, and university levels.
  • Typical workload balance research:teaching:service is 40:40:20 

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE: 

  • A Ph.D in mathematical sciences such as Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, and Statistics.
  • Postdoctoral research experience for junior appointment.
  • Proven record for scholarly research and publications in top-tier international venues.
  • Demonstrated ability, or clear potential, to secure competitive external research funding.
  • Clear potential for local industrial collaboration.
  • Evidence of, or potential for, excellence in teaching and graduate supervision.
  • Fluency in English.
