About the role:
Do you enjoy turning ideas into practical, working systems that support world-class research and teaching? We are seeking a skilled and motivated Electromechanical Workshop Technician to join our Department Workshop team. This is an exciting opportunity to provide high-quality electrical, electronic and mechanical engineering support across a wide range of laboratory and experimental activities. Working under the direction of the Mechanical and Electronics Workshop Manager, you will help develop, build, install, and maintain experimental rigs, prototype systems, and teaching equipment, ensuring that all work is delivered to high technical, safety, and quality standards.
What you would be doing:
This is a varied, hands-on role at the heart of the Department’s research and teaching infrastructure. You will support academic staff, researchers and students by contributing to the manufacture, assembly, installation and maintenance of electromechanical systems used in both research projects and core teaching laboratories.
Your work will include assembling analogue and digital electronic circuits, integrating sensors, actuators and computer control systems, and building panels, enclosures and power distribution arrangements for experimental rigs. You will also help diagnose faults, carry out repairs, and support the safe testing and maintenance of electrical and electronic equipment.
In addition, you will manufacture basic mechanical components using manual machine tools and undertake fabrication work such as cutting, folding, drilling and milling to produce structural frames and assemblies. You will help bring electrical, electronic and mechanical elements together into complete sub-systems, laboratory apparatus and bespoke research rigs, supporting installation, commissioning, adjustment and ongoing maintenance.
The role also involves working closely with staff and students to provide practical technical advice, support project work, and help develop prototypes and experiment-specific solutions. Alongside this, you will contribute to the upkeep and improvement of workshop facilities, maintain accurate work records, and play an active role in promoting a strong culture of health, safety and continuous improvement.
