The University of Winchester is a values-driven institution with a long-standing commitment to education, the advancement of knowledge, and service to the common good. With origins dating back to 1840, the University has built a distinctive reputation for delivering transformational education and fostering a supportive, inclusive academic community. Today, Winchester is home to over 7,000 students and 800 staff, combining strong academic provision with a deep commitment to student success, civic engagement, and social impact.
Located in the historic and vibrant city of Winchester, the University offers a high-quality, campus-based experience with modern, sustainable facilities and strong links to regional employers, public services, and community partners. As a member of the Cathedrals Group, Winchester is particularly recognised for preparing students for meaningful careers in areas such as education, health, policing, and social work.
Following 4 years of strong, transformational leadership, the current Vice-Chancellor has confirmed her intention to retire in the summer. As such, the University now seeks to appoint its next Vice-Chancellor. Reporting to the Board of Governors, the Vice-Chancellor will serve as the University’s Chief Executive and academic leader, responsible for delivering its mission to educate, advance knowledge, and serve society. The successful candidate will provide clear strategic leadership, driving delivery of the University’s Strategic Plan (2023–28) while shaping future direction through collaboration with staff, students, governors, and external partners.
Candidates will bring significant executive-level leadership experience within a complex organisation, ideally in higher education or a similarly regulated environment. They will champion excellence in teaching, student experience, and research, ensuring continued improvement in outcomes, employability, and institutional performance. They will also demonstrate a strong track record of strategic delivery, financial stewardship, and organisational leadership, alongside the ability to engage and inspire diverse stakeholders. A deep understanding of the UK higher education landscape, combined with a commitment to widening participation, student success, and societal impact, will be essential.
The University of Winchester is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion, and welcomes applications from candidates from all backgrounds. We particularly encourage applications from individuals from underrepresented groups.
