University of Oxford - NPEU Clinical Trials Unit - Nuffield Department of Women’s & Reproductive Health

Location: Oxford
Salary: £109,725 per annum pro rata. Clinical Grade E.82
Hours: Part Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 6th May 2026
Closes: 8th May 2026
Job Ref: 186307

You are invited to join the National Perinatal Epidemiology Unit (NPEU) as a Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant in Public Health, focusing on improving the health and care of women and babies. In this clinical academic role, you will bring your medical qualification or UKPHR consultant-level registration, maintaining an honorary consultant contract alongside appropriate professional registration (GMC with licence to practise, GDC specialist registration, or UKPHR). Applicants not yet on the relevant register must demonstrate eligibility within six months of interview.

You will provide leadership in applied public health research in women’s, perinatal, and reproductive health, with a strong commitment to addressing health inequalities. Working collaboratively with academic colleagues, policymakers, local authorities, service providers, and third-sector partners, you will help shape national research programmes, inform policy development, and ensure that NPEU’s evidence translates into meaningful improvements in practice and outcomes.

Key responsibilities include leading high-quality research programmes; securing significant competitive external funding; publishing in leading journals; supervising doctoral students and research fellows; and building multidisciplinary teams. You will apply implementation science approaches to strengthen evidence-based interventions and work closely with services and communities, particularly those experiencing disadvantage. You will work with local government in Oxfordshire to support evidence led decision making to address population health needs and tackle inequalities across the county.

As a public health leader, you will provide expert advice to national committees, contribute to local public health responsibilities, and support interdisciplinary teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. You will mentor early-career researchers and contribute to training and leadership development within the wider health system.

Applicants must hold Membership of the Faculty of Public Health (MFPH) or equivalent, a Master’s degree in Public Health (or equivalent), and a PhD in Public Health, Epidemiology, Population Health, Social Science, or a related discipline with relevance to maternal or women’s health. You must meet CPD and revalidation requirements in line with Faculty or professional body standards. This is a clinical post and you must be medically qualified or UKPHR registered at consultant-equivalent level.

You should demonstrate a strong publication record appropriate to career stage; a proven track record of securing major external research funding; experience of teaching and supervision; advanced skills in analysing and interpreting complex quantitative and qualitative data; experience working across academia and public health practice; and excellent communication, leadership, and organisational skills.

This is a significant opportunity to act as a national leader and change agent in women’s and perinatal public health, driving research excellence and delivering measurable improvements in health equity. The NPEU is an internationally recognised, multidisciplinary research unit based within the Nuffield Department of Women’s and Reproductive Health at the University of Oxford.

This role is part time 0.6 FTE and is fixed term for three years. Applications for flexible working arrangements are welcomed and will be considered in line with business needs. Pay will begin at £109,702 per annum pro rata for full time equivalent and increase in line with academic pay scales.

The closing date for applications is 12.00 noon on Friday 8th May 2026. Interviews are expected to take place on Friday 22nd May 2026.
