Full Professor for Time-based Media

Are you eager to provide students with practical academic training and support? The Faculty of Archi­tecture and Design is hiring (starting March 1st, 2027) a:

Full Professor for Time-based Media (M/W/D)

Salary bracket W2 (Reference No. 1-1119)

Your Domain

  • Independent teaching and research of foundation, techniques and strategies of digital time-based media, including the complete production process, the conceptual development and dramaturgy, aesthetic competence, basics of visual culture, as well as the history and theory of time-based media.
  • Teaching methodological, theoretical, historical and practical aspects of time-based media projects in an artistic and/or design context.
  • Bachelor and master-level teaching primarily in the Visual Communication Design department,
    and in some cases in the School of Architecture and Design, and throughout the HTWG.
  • The advising of students during their Bachelor’s thesis and Master’s thesis work, and during their internships/work placements.
  • Managing and further developing the time-based media laboratory/studio
  • Active involvement in the ongoing evolution of the department and in international relations.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Artistic and/or applied research (funding, publications) and transfer,
  • Cooperations with other departments (e. g. Computer Science, Architecture, Humanities) and institutions, as well as contributing to continuing education,
  • Writing grant proposals and the acquisition of external (third-party) funding,
  • Fulfilling your leadership role in a cooperative responsible manner and
  • Teaching in accordance with the HTWG “Teaching Mission Statement” („Leitbild Lehre“).

The position holder shall fulfill the official duties of university teachers pursuant to § 46 of Baden-Württemberg’s State University Act (LHG).

Your Profile

The profile is based on the hiring qualifications according to LHG § 47. Specifically, you have:

  • A degree in Arts and Design (Master’s Degree / German ‘Diplom’ or equivalent)
  • Exceptional artistic aptitude in the field(s) of applied contemporary moving image media, me­dia art, interactive media (installations) or time-based generative media, combined with pro­duction and implementation skills.
  • Well-founded design, artistic, critical, and scientific skills and achievements in the growing field of contemporary digital time-based media, their socio-ethical responsibility and contemporary visual culture.
  • The search committee expects in your digitally submitted portfolio a collection of time-based media work, along with a short written statement on your work methodology, as well as prizes and awards from competitions. The candidate’s contributions should be specified with team projects.
  • Ideally a minimum of five years professional experience in the areas of time-based media and digital moving image generation, with ideally at least three years of non-academic experience.
  • Teaching experience in the field of time-based media, within or outside the context of higher education.
  • Motivation and aptitude for continuous development in these areas.
  • A very good command of English and German (for non-German candidates within a defined time period, if necessary) and the desire and willingness to teach in both English and German language.

Ideally, you have experience in the following areas:

  • Superior skills in the areas of: concept development, creative design, dramaturgy and story­telling
  • Superior skills in artistic research and its linguistic reflection and/or in practices of creative coding and programming in artistic and design-related applications.
  • Sound design skills.
  • Experience in cross-media design and integrated concept development. Experience in an international context.

Professors are initially hired as probationary civil servants. Tenured (lifelong) civil service positions are offered after three years without a further application process, provided that the probationary professor continues to fulfil the requirements of civil service law.
