Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Permanent

The School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at the University of Southampton welcomes applications for senior teaching fellow (assistant professor level equivalent) in chemical engineering. The School graduated its first undergraduates in chemical engineering in 2025. We have grown staff and student numbers over the last 5 years and invested heavily in teaching facilities. Our BEng, MEng and MSc programmes were recently accredited by the Institution of Chemical Engineers.

About the role

We seek candidates with a strong focus on education and willingness to teach across a range of topics within the core chemical engineering syllabus. You will need to be strongly committed to supporting students in your teaching, as a personal tutor and through School leadership roles. It is likely that initially the appointee will be asked to support student placements, so we’re interested in hearing about any experience in that space.

We expect the appointee to join our Chemical Education group, with other education specialists from chemistry and chemical engineering. These staff have a range of interests in addition to education and student support including various leadership roles within the School, University and wider community, pedagogic research and outreach.

About you

The successful applicant will demonstrate:

  • A track record in teaching a range of chemical engineering topics.
  • An ability to inspire students and colleagues.
  • Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion.
  • A flexible approach to taking on roles as necessary to achieve strong student support.

What we can offer you

  • A collegiate research-led School that strongly values contributions in education.
  • An established and growing chemical engineering activity.
  • Membership of an education-focused staff group with experience of how to progress an education-focused career.

The University of Southampton values diversity and equality, and we actively encourage applications from under-represented groups. We are delighted to hold the Race Equality Charter Bronze Award 2022, and both institutional and departmental Athena SWAN silver awards. We recognise that employees may wish to have working patterns that fit with caring responsibilities or work-life balance. Due consideration will be given to applicants who have had career breaks for maternity, paternity or adoption leave, disability or illness.

Interviews will take place in person in Southampton. Southampton is well connected – just over an hour from central London and with an international airport, but with beautiful surroundings on the south coast and in the New Forest. Find out more about the University and the city here.

If you are interested or need advice about your suitability to the posts, you are encouraged to contact the Head of the Chemical Education group, Prof Paul Duckmanton, for further details.
