About the role
Applications are invited for a full-time Innovation Research Associate position to work with Professor Helen Wilson. This Innovation Research Associate (InRA) position will contribute to research carried out within the newly established EPSRC Network Plus Scale Up Mathematics for Formulated Products (SUM4Products). As part of the role, the InRA is expected to collaborate and develop links with industrial partners.
Another similar role on the same project is currently being advertised within the University of Birmingham: see the project website https://www.sum4products.co.uk/ for details.
This post is available from 1st August 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter for approximately 24 months in the first instance due to funding restrictions.
Salary will be UCL Grade 7 point 31-32 £45,103 - £46,261 (annum inclusive of London Allowance).
About you
A successful candidate should have a good undergraduate degree and either have a PhD or equivalent qualification or should be finalising their PhD or waiting for their viva date, in applied mathematics, physical sciences, engineering or a related area.
Please note: Appointment at Grade 7 is dependent on award and confirmation of a PhD (or equivalent). If this is not the case, the initial appointment will be at Research Assistant Grade 6B, point 25 (salary 39,148 per annum inclusive of London allowance) with payment at Grade 7 being backdated to the date of final submission of the PhD thesis.
The successful candidate is expected to have a proven track record of conducting modelling research in areas relevant to formulation science, including fluid dynamics, continuum mechanics, soft matter, interfacial phenomena, heat and mass transfer, or a closely related area, alongside experience in delivering research project results; i.e. a record of peer-reviewed journal and conference papers in a relevant area.
An outstanding candidate will have experience collaborating with industrial partners and experience of scoping out ideas for new research projects and identifying ways to address them mathematically/computationally. They will be willing to take the lead in discussions during SUM4Products events, and willing to travel within and outside of the UK to attend conferences, workshops, and research visits.
