About the School of Humanities, Social Sciences and Health

The School of Humanities, Social Sciences, and Health at the University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) is home to interdisciplinary programs that combine critical inquiry, creative practice, and global perspectives.

Within the School, Media Studies plays a central role in the delivery of the Bachelor of Communication and Media (BCM) and Master of Media Design (MMD) programs. The discipline focuses on screen media, media industries, transnational media cultures, and emerging forms such as game media and digital storytelling. Teaching and learning are informed by contemporary scholarship as well as practice‑based and industry‑aware approaches, preparing students for creative and critical engagement with modern media environments.

The department is in a growth and development phase, offering an exciting opportunity for new academic staff to contribute to curriculum development, shape teaching practice, and bring disciplinary expertise into a collaborative and evolving academic environment.

About the Role

The University of Wollongong in Dubai (UOWD) invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in Screen Media Production, with a secondary focus on Game Media.

This is a balanced teaching and research role forming part of the Bachelor of Communication and Media (BCM) program. The successful candidate will contribute to high‑quality undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, curriculum development, and scholarly activities aligned with contemporary screen, media, and cultural industries.

This role is suited to an academically grounded and pedagogically strong educator with deep disciplinary knowledge in screen media, film, or related fields, and the ability to inspire students through critical, creative, and industry‑aware teaching.

Teaching Responsibilities

The successful candidate will contribute to teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programs, with indicative subjects including:

  • Introduction to Screen Media Production
  • Transmedia Storytelling
  • Transnational Media and Culture Industries
  • Game Media Industries

Teaching responsibilities include designing and delivering lectures and tutorials, assessing student work, supporting student learning and progression, and contributing to the ongoing development of the BCM curriculum. Courses may evolve over time in line with program growth and academic direction.

Research & Scholarly Engagement

The role supports practice‑based and/or scholarly research aligned with screen media, media industries, and related disciplines. While there is no minimum publication requirement, candidates should demonstrate research capability or emerging trajectory appropriate to an Assistant Professor level, including professional or practice‑based outputs where relevant.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential Selection Criteria

Applicants must demonstrate:

  • PhD (completed by commencement) in Screen Media, Film Studies, Media and Communication, Cinema Studies, or a closely related discipline
  • At least 3 years’ teaching experience in higher education
  • Demonstrated discipline‑specific knowledge in screen media, film, media industries, or closely related fields
  • Strong pedagogical alignment and ability to teach media concepts critically and creatively
  • Evidence of effective communication of academic expertise (e.g. through CV, teaching materials, or portfolio)

Candidates not meeting these criteria will not progress to interview.

Desirable Attributes

  • Experience or interest in Game Media or related digital media forms
  • Practice‑based or industry‑informed research experience
  • Ability to contribute to curriculum development and program growth

Compensation and Benefits

The University offers an expatriate package, which is an attractive tax-free salary.
