The Faculty of Science and Computing at SETU Waterford is composed of five Departments, one of which is the Department of Veterinary Medicine. The Department was established to facilitate the development and roll out of a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (MVB) at SETU. The newly established department builds on an established track record of undergraduate, taught postgraduate and PhD activities in agricultural science, pharmaceutical science, and health science programmes at the university. SETU is seeking a highly motivated Senior Academic in Veterinary Medicine with personal drive and ambition, dedicated to making a significant and lasting contribution to animal welfare, our learners, and the veterinary sector, as well as to the development of the University and the furtherance of its core values. The academic will play a key role in the development, implementation, and delivery of veterinary education, research, and professional practice within the Department of Veterinary Medicine.

The appointee will report to the Head of Department and Head of Faculty of Science and Computing, and will have a senior role in the academic direction of the MVB programme, including teaching, research, academic assessment, academic administration and professional standards and student support. The appointee will act as an advisor to management in quality assurance issues and will participate in quality assurance and accreditation procedures. The appointee, a registered suitably qualified veterinary surgeon, will have a strong understanding of the full scope of veterinary medicine education and practice with the integration of cutting-edge research and innovation aligned with SETU ethos of research led teaching. The appointee will play a significant role in:

  • Acting as MVB Programme Director programme, supporting the application and development of innovative teaching, learning and research methodologies in veterinary education; supporting the Head of Department and Academic Team in ensuring the professional requirements of the accreditation are achieved/maintained;
  • Academic and pastoral support for students of the MVB as academic Programme Director, working with a multi-disciplinary team;
  • The development of research activities aligned to Veterinary Medicine, fulfilling SETUs and the MVB ethos of research led teaching;
  • Supporting the achievement of KPIs within the Department of Veterinary Medicine related to the MVB, working with the Head of Department in activities;
  • Engagement with external stakeholders
  • Programme development

In addition to the role within the Department, the Senior Lecturer is required to actively engage in processes and activities within the Faculty and wider University and with external stakeholders such as Industry, prospective students, funding agencies, relevant government bodies, other Universities in a collaborative manner. The position calls for a highly motivated and experienced individual who will contribute to the development, implementation and delivery of programmes and research in the Department of Veterinary Medicine.
