About us

The Department of Theology & Religious Studies (TRS) welcomes applicants for the role of fixed-term Lecturer in Theology and the Arts (AEP).

You will contribute to teaching, scholarship, & administration in a TRS department with a strong record of research and teaching that bridges the divide between theology and religious studies, with expertise in multiple religious traditions and a wide variety of research methods. The successful candidate will teach on a number of modules in the area of Theology and the Arts.

About the role

As Lecturer in Theology and the Arts you will contribute to teaching on our BA and MA programmes, including the modules Religion and the Arts in London, and The Idea of Beauty in Western Theology (taught over two semesters). You will convene the dissertation module for the MA in Theology, Bible and the Arts.

You will assess coursework and examinations, and undertake Undergraduate and MA dissertation supervision.

You will contribute to scholarship within the department and to the wider research environment. 

You will contribute to the welfare of students through the Personal Tutor System, and fulfil administrative roles and tasks as directed by Head of Department, as well as contributing to departmental events and activities, including attendance at departmental meetings and open days.

Applicants for this role would normally be in the early stages of an academic career, with a profile appropriate to appointment at Lecturer level. This is a full-time post offered on a 1 year fixed-term contract.

About you:

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  • PhD in Christian theology, or another relevant subject area
  • Clearly defined research interests related to Theology and the Arts compatible with the research, impact & engagement strategies of the Department, Faculty and College 
  • Some experience of teaching relevant to the areas specified by the department, with clear evidence of potential to deliver innovative, effective & enjoyable teaching
  • Commitment to collaborative working and willingness to contribute to the administration of the department and to its strategic development
  • Awareness of and ability to inclusively accommodate a diversity of identities & protected characteristics in a higher education environment

Desirable criteria

  • Teaching in Higher Education qualification (such as fellowship or associate fellowship of the Higher Education Academy) 
  • Ability to converse and collaborate across disciplinary, religious, and cultural boundaries, expanding the range of the Department’s existing specialisms
  • Potential to produce high quality publications
