Job Summary

The School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Birmingham is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in Palaeobiology (Education-focused). This is a 1-year fixed-term, part-time post at 0.5 FTE, providing cover for a research fellowship, and is expected to start in September 2026. We are looking for a motivated, development-focused and collegial individual to contribute to the ongoing delivery and development of our Earth Sciences education activities. The role will have a particular focus on Palaeobiology and related areas, while also supporting teaching and student learning across the wider Earth Sciences curriculum.

The successful candidate will teach and assess a range of Earth Sciences modules, contribute to research training for undergraduate and postgraduate students and providing tutorial support for undergraduate students. They will also contribute to the School’s programme of UK-based and overseas field courses. While this is an education-focused appointment, we place a strong emphasis on providing research-intensive teaching, and there is scope for doing academic research. Successful candidates will be provided with career development support appropriate to their career stage, including access to mentoring and coaching support.

Main Responsibilities

Education

You will contribute across the range of teaching and learning activities:

  • Contribute collaboratively to leading curriculum development and/or renewal;
  • Develop and manage approaches to teaching and learning that are best practice in the subject area;
  • Using a variety of methods in teaching and advising individuals and groups of undergraduates, including (as appropriate):
  • Designing contemporary, inclusive, engaging and academically challenging curriculum content;

Person Specification

As a minimum the key qualifications, skills and experience required.

  • Ability to start the position on the 1st September 2026.
  • A higher Degree relevant to the discipline area (usually PhD) or equivalent qualifications.
  • Relevant and demonstrable teaching experience and scholarship within the subject specialism, Palaeobiology.
  • Teaching
    • Ability to design, deliver, assess and revise teaching programmes.
    • Extensive experience and demonstrated success in developing appropriate approaches to learning and teaching and advising colleagues.
  • Management Administration
    • Ability to contribute to School management processes.
    • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively.
    • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration processes.
    • Experience of championing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in own work area.
