UCL - MRC Prion Unit

Location: London
Salary: From £57,488 inclusive of London Allowance
Hours: Full Time
Contract Type: Fixed-Term/Contract
Placed On: 19th May 2026
Closes: 2nd June 2026
Job Ref: B02-10580

About the role

You will work under the supervision of Dr Gargi Banerjee (grant holder) within a research programme titled “The expanded prion paradigm and amyloid-beta diseases”. This research explores recent clinical observations which show that the amyloid-beta protein, which causes Alzheimer’s disease and cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) can behave as a prion, and cause newly identified iatrogenic diseases in people exposed to cadaveric tissues earlier in life. The MRC Prion Unit at UCL has led research in this area, with high profile publications in journals including Nature and Nature Medicine.

You will primarily support a new longitudinal cohort study, which will review whether people previously treated with cadaveric human growth hormone have early signs of Alzheimer’s disease or CAA. You will contribute to clinical data collection and analysis for this study, and to the study’s patient and public engagement/involvement (PPI) activities, which includes the creation of a peer-support group for this cohort.

An Honorary Clinical contract will be sought from UCLH, and any other Trusts where the postholder may provide input, for which a DBS check will be required.

The post is available and is funded by the Medical Research Council for one year. There may be a possibility of a one-year extension, but this cannot be guaranteed at this stage.

If you need reasonable adjustments or a more accessible format to apply for this job online, or have any queries regarding the application process, please contact HR (p.petmeza@ucl.ac.uk).

You will have a medical degree (MBBS, MB BCh, or equivalent) and be GMC registered with a license to practice (or be eligible for full GMC registration).

You will be a registered medical practitioner permitted to practise in the UK and have completed general medical training.

This role meets the eligibility requirements for a skilled worker certificate of sponsorship or a global talent visa under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Therefore, UCL welcomes applications from international applicants who require a visa.
