The School of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Glasgow invites applications for a Junior Assistant Clinician (JAC) to join our busy equine referral hospital.

This post provides structured, broad‑based clinical exposure across equine medicine and surgery, offering supervised experience across services. It is particularly suited to candidates seeking a strong foundation for a range of future specialist training pathways,

N.B. The post is offered on a 1 year fixed-term basis, such that they offer the early-stage clinical experience required as vets prepare for further specialist training, for example through European Board of Veterinary Specialisation (EBVS®) approved residencies and/or masters formal training programmes.  While appointments may be extended for a short-fixed term period where this would be in the mutual interest, in the interests of ensuring that veterinary career development is supported, and to assist with recruitment to the University’s EBVS® approved Residency and our own Masters Programmes, the one-year duration will remain the normal duration.

The role

The post will involve delivering high‑quality veterinary care to referred equine patients, while contributing fully to clinical, teaching and research activities.

All Junior Assistant Clinicians will:

  • Participate in the hospital’s 24/7 clinical rota, including shared night duties
  • Assist in the provision of equine clinical care at referral level
  • Present clinical cases and recommendations as directed
  • Support undergraduate student training through instruction, supervision and feedback
  • Maintain accurate clinical records
  • Communicate effectively with clients and referring practices
  • Engage in CPD, self‑reflection and professional development

About you

Applicants must:

  • Hold a veterinary degree registerable with the RCVS
  • Have considerable practical experience working with horses
  • Be confident with core equine clinical skills)
  • Work effectively within a multidisciplinary clinical team
  • Demonstrate professionalism, motivation and high ethical standards
  • Be willing to undertake out‑of‑hours work

Previous experience in first‑opinion or referral equine practice, clinical case responsibility, teaching, and research activity is desirable.
