Departmental Lecturer in Global and Area Studies
Location: Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA), University of Oxford
Salary: Grade 7: £39,424 – £47,779 per annum
The Oxford School of Global and Area Studies (OSGA) is seeking to appoint a full-time, fixed-term Departmental Lecturer in Global and Area Studies for three years from 1 September 2026, or as soon as possible thereafter.
About the Role
The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, supervision, examining, and administration for the MPhil in Global and Area Studies (GAS) while participating actively in the wider academic life of OSGA. The post also offers opportunities for independent research.
Responsibilities include convening and teaching qualitative research methods classes, contributing to the core courses “Competing Approaches in Area Studies” and “Global and Area Studies Seminar,” supervising MPhil dissertations, and undertaking assessment duties. The successful applicant may also convene an existing GAS option or design a new course linked to their expertise.
Since its launch in 2021, the MPhil in Global and Area Studies has developed innovative approaches to Area Studies by combining comparative, global, and transnational perspectives while remaining grounded in local contexts. Applications are welcomed from scholars whose research and teaching align with these aims.
OSGA is one of the world’s largest communities of Area Studies scholars, with research and teaching focused on Africa, China, Latin America, the Middle East, Japan, Russia and Eastern Europe, South Asia, and Comparative Area Studies. The School offers a diverse academic environment with MSc, MPhil, and DPhil programmes, as well as the Oxford 1+1 MBA with Saïd Business School.
About You
Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a PhD in a relevant social sciences discipline. Candidates must demonstrate research expertise with comparative, global, or transnational dimensions and show commitment to Global and Area Studies.
The ideal candidate will have a publication profile appropriate to career stage, the ability to contribute effectively to postgraduate teaching, and strong communication and collaborative skills. Experience teaching qualitative research methods and familiarity with comparative area studies would be advantageous.
