BCAST is a world-leading speciality research centre focusing on solidification related research. BCAST prides itself on its innovation and creativity. Our activities cover fundamental research, technological development and industrial applications in the field of solidification and solidification processing.

Applications from individuals are invited for a position of Research Fellow in the project “Next generation billets for structural aluminium extrusions” in Brunel Centre for Advanced Solidification Technology (BCAST) at Brunel University of London. The position, funded by the industry and Norwegian Research Council, is for 12 months.

The project involves the fundamental and applied studies on the effects of minor additions on grain refinement and hot tearing in wrought aluminium alloys, in particular those made with recycled aluminium. This includes thermodynamic modelling, analysis of structure and phase composition of commercial and model alloys, and measurements of specialised functional properties using custom-made and state-of-the-art equipment. The project is performed in collaboration with SINTEF, Hydro Aluminium and Hycast (all from Norway). Therefore, the successful candidate will join a collaborative team.

The successful candidate will be specifically responsible for the mechanisms of grain refining and hot tearing.

The successful candidate should have a degree or equivalent in materials science and engineering, physics, chemistry or another related scientific or engineering discipline, and should have a strong background in experimental research. Prior expertise in alloy development and advanced materials characterisation is an important selection criterion. In addition, good communication skills and proficiency in written and spoken English are required.
