About the role
Newnham College is seeking to recruit a full-time, permanent HEAD OF BUILDINGS & MAINTENANCE to oversee the efficient day-to-day running of the Maintenance Department. Reporting to the Domestic Bursar, this key role is responsible for planning and implementing the annual cycle of planned preventative maintenance, re-active maintenance, planning future building and maintenance projects, legal compliance, and supporting consistently high levels of quality assurance and health & safety throughout the department.
The College works regularly with external contractors, trades people and architects and substantial experience in dealing with multiple facets of complex maintenance projects will be a distinct advantage. Being able to handle evaluations, bids and tenders, to work within budgets, and to deliver projects on time, often within tight time parameters, are all essential to this job as is keeping the Domestic Bursar and the Bursar informed at all times.
This role is the Head of the Maintenance Department comprising 9 other staff (a deputy, 2 carpenter/joiners, 2 plumbers, 2 painter/decorators and 2 electricians) and so is responsible for monitoring, supervising and developing them in their roles and helping them to achieve their professional objectives and the wider objectives of the department.
This is a permanent, full-time post, working 37.5 hours a week. However, as a department head, it is expected that you will work the hours necessary to achieve department objectives. The post is paid at point 58 on the University’s single salary spine, currently £61,759 per annum and the post is pensionable under the College’s attractive contributory pension scheme (USS), with a current employer contribution rate of 14.5%. The holiday entitlement is 33 days per year (inclusive of bank holidays), plus your Birthday off as an additional paid day, a free meal when on duty, free car parking and free use of the College’s gym facilities. The College is also a member of the Medicash Health Cashplan, allowing you to claim money back on a wide range of day-to-day health expenses.
About you
The successful applicant will have significant relevant experience as a buildings/ maintenance manager and team leader. You will be conversant with relevant health and safety laws, building regulations, and industry approved codes of practice and regulations, be an able communicator and be used to having a number of complex projects on the go at one time.
The College, established in 1871, has many beautiful buildings, old and new, where working sensitively, and with sustainability in mind to keep them functioning safely and in good order is paramount. Strong verbal communication skills, flexibility, a willingness to join other team members working together to get the job done are all required.
