Senior Research Associate (Sound Studies)

Manchester Metropolitan University's School of Digital Arts (SODA) is seeking a highly motivated and intellectually curious Research Associate to support the development of two innovative monographs in the field of Sound Studies.

This exciting 12-month fixed-term position offers a unique opportunity to gain detailed insight into the research, development, and publication of academic monographs with prestigious publishers in the UK and USA. The successful applicant will work closely with the author throughout all stages of the projects, liaising with publishers, interviewees, and external collaborators while supporting the development of two ambitious and interdisciplinary books.

The Monographs

The first monograph explores the evolution of artificial intelligence through the lens of occult and esoteric practices, rituals, speculative histories, and philosophical traditions.

The second monograph examines multisensory storytelling and immersive worldbuilding through converged media, with a focus on sound, embodiment, narrative environments, and emerging media practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct interdisciplinary research across Sound Studies, media theory, philosophy, cultural studies, and emerging technologies.
  • Support literature reviews, archival research, transcription, and interview coordination.
  • Assist with manuscript preparation, references, proposals, and publication materials.
  • Manage communication with publishers, contributors, and interview participants.
  • Organise research schedules, documentation, and project materials.
  • Assist in the development of case studies, audiovisual references, and supporting research outputs.

Essential Criteria

  • A postgraduate qualification (completed or near completion) in Sound Studies, Media Studies, Cultural Studies, Digital Humanities, Philosophy, or a related discipline.
  • Excellent research, writing, and organisational skills.
  • Demonstrable interest in sound, media theory, artificial intelligence, immersive storytelling, or critical technology studies.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a research-intensive environment.
  • Strong communication skills and attention to detail.

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience of academic publishing, editorial processes, or research assistance.
  • Familiarity with qualitative research methods and interview-based research.
  • Knowledge of debates surrounding AI, esotericism, media archaeology, immersive media, or sensory studies.
  • Experience working with audiovisual media or creative research practices.
