The Department of Materials, Design and Manufacturing Engineering at the University of Liverpool invites applications for an internationally distinguished Professor in Thin Film Engineering (Teaching & Research track).
We are seeking a candidate with the leadership and international standing to develop a world-leading research agenda in thin film engineering and advanced thin film technologies. We welcome applications from candidates with expertise across chemical and physical vapour deposition, atomic layer deposition, micro- and nano-fabrication, functional coatings, semiconductor and electronic materials, surface engineering, thin film characterisation, or related emerging areas.
You will join a dynamic and rapidly growing department at the centre of major institutional investment in advanced materials, manufacturing, and engineering innovation. Supported by significant investment in state-of-the-art thin film deposition and characterisation infrastructure. The University of Liverpool offers an outstanding environment for ambitious research leadership, including access to world-class facilities such as the Royal Society-Wolfson Foundation Cleanroom, advanced atomic layer deposition and MOCVD systems, the IonToF Qtac 100 low energy ion scattering facility, and extensive materials characterisation capabilities. Additional facilities are available through the Materials Innovation Factory, Faculty Shared Research Facilities, the Albert Crewe Centre for Electron Microscopy, and close collaborations across the School of Engineering.
We are particularly interested in candidates whose research aligns with strategically important sectors including defence and security, advanced electronics, sensing technologies, renewable energy, biomedical devices, and functional materials.
You will play a pivotal role in shaping the future direction of thin film engineering research and education at Liverpool, strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration across engineering, science and industry while supporting national capability, industrial competitiveness and global technological resilience.
Interviews and candidate presentations will take place on 1 October 2026 at the University of Liverpool.
