Opportunity Overview

This is an exciting opportunity to join the GROW AI Project that aims to accelerate responsible and secure AI development and adoption, speed up research-to-commercialization pathways, and deliver inclusive economic growth across Greater Manchester (GM).          

The projects within the GROW AI portfolio are demand-led. Drawing on insights from the existing AI ecosystem and its future potential, it addresses key growth-enabling gaps for AI startups, scaleups and SMEs. Alongside AI-first businesses, it will focus on the Health, Creative and Cyber sectors, and on growth-enabling public services. These sectors represent areas where GM has unique environments that, with the right catalytic activity, will be fertile ground for significant AI-powered growth.

Key Responsibilities 

This role focuses on developing responsible, reliable and secure AI solutions that can make a significant impact on GMs economic growth, health and wellbeing.

This particular role is for an AI specialist who is familiar with a wide range of AI methods, ranging from deep neural networks, to language models and agentic systems. You should have experience of using Python, frameworks like Keras, Pytorch and platforms like Azure and AWS. You will be responsible for liaising with businesses to understand their challenges, and be able to adopt methodologies to help design, recommend and develop effective AI driven solutions. 

GROW AI is a collaborative project with the Centre for Sustainable Innovation at Salford, and Manchester Metropolitan University so you will be expected to work well in a team and participate in meetings with partners.

About the School or About the Department

This role is in the School of Science, Engineering and Environment, within the Computer Science Subject Group. The primary research areas of the group include Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, Cyber Security, and Software Engineering. 

Our research in Artificial Intelligence encompassing the full spectrum of AI theory and applications, including image recognition, reinforcement learning, large language models and agentic systems. 

We work closely with industry and, through projects such as the GM AI Foundry, and the Centre for Digital Innovation, we have supported many SMEs to utilize AI to develop innovative applications.
