The University of Reading is seeking a committed, proactive, and highly organised Night Shift Supervisor to join our Security Services team. This key role ensures the safety and security of our staff, students, and visitors throughout the night, while supporting smooth and effective campus operations. Working 12‑hour shifts on a 4 on / 4 off rota, you will lead a team that is central to maintaining a safe, professional, and reassuring environment across the University estate.

About the Role

The Night Shift Supervisor is responsible for the leadership and coordination of night-time security operations. This includes the management of up to four Security Controllers and nine Halls of Residence Patrollers, ensuring the delivery of a responsive, high‑quality, and community‑focused security service.

You will oversee the deployment of staff, deliver supervision and guidance, and ensure that operational duties are carried out in line with University policies, professional standards, and legislative requirements. Your role will also involve the effective use of modern electronic security systems—including CCTV networks, intruder alarms, and fire detection equipment—to maintain vigilance and protect the University’s people, property, and assets.

  • Ensure the Security Control Room remains fully operational at all times and that all monitoring and incident‑response functions are carried out effectively.
  • Supervise all mobile and foot patrols, ensuring visibility, professionalism, and adherence to assignment instructions.
  • Prepare and maintain clear, accurate assignment instructions, ensuring compliance with best practice and contributing to the development of wider security policies and procedures.

About You

We are seeking a confident leader with strong decision‑making skills, excellent communication, and the ability to remain calm, clear‑headed, and professional during demanding situations. You should have previous experience supervising staff in a security, emergency services, or similar operational environment. A working knowledge of CCTV monitoring, emergency responses, and security legislation is highly desirable.

You will also be skilled in planning, incident management, and maintaining effective working relationships across teams and departments.

Why Join Us?

This is an excellent opportunity to take on a senior operational role within the security profession, working in a supportive and valued team at one of the UK’s leading universities. Alongside a competitive salary, the role includes a rotating shift allowance and 15.2 hours of guaranteed contractual overtime each month, providing additional earning potential.

If you are motivated, dependable, and ready for the next step in your career, we welcome your application.
