The Department of Sociology is seeking to appoint an Assistant Professor in Computational Social Science to support the delivery of our new UG Social Science with Data Science programme. This is an exciting opportunity to join a research-active department and contribute to an innovative interdisciplinary degree which combines social inquiry with data analytics.

The successful candidate will be responsible for designing and delivering teaching in computational social science, social data science, quantitative methods and related areas.

You will play a key role supporting students to understand how data can be obtained, managed, analysed and presented to better understand social, economic and human processes in contemporary society.

Alongside teaching, you will be supported to pursue your own independent research and contribute to the wider research culture of Sociology at Warwick. You will also undertake appropriate administrative and collegial duties in support of the department.

This full-time post is available on a fixed-term basis for one year in the first instance. The department hopes that there may be potential for the role to continue beyond this period, subject to future funding and ongoing requirements.

About the Department

The Department of Sociology at the University of Warwick is one of the UK's leading Sociology departments, recognised nationally and internationally for the quality of its teaching and research. We are ranked 8th in the UK for Sociology in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2026 and among the top 100 Sociology departments globally in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026. In REF2021, 100% of our research environment was judged to be conducive to producing research of world-leading or internationally excellent quality.

Our research and teaching engage with some of the most pressing challenges facing contemporary societies, including those related to inequality, migration, race and ethnicity, gender, sustainability, technology and social justice. The Department hosts a wide programme of research activities and seminars throughout the year, delivered through our research clusters and centres. We are also expanding our teaching portfolio, with two new undergraduate programmes due to launch in the next academic year (2026-27).

Sociology has a strong culture of community and engagement that extends beyond teaching and research. Our Care Collective provides an informal space for collegial support, and our Green Team is responsible for identifying and implementing departmental actions that contribute to environmental sustainability.

We are proud to hold an Athena Swan Silver Award, recognising our commitment to advancing gender equality and creating an inclusive working and learning environment. As part of our ongoing commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, we are currently working towards Athena Swan Gold accreditation.

We strive to create a culture in which everyone is treated with dignity and respect, differences are valued, and all members of our community are supported to thrive. We warmly welcome applications from candidates of all backgrounds.
