The School of Physics and Astronomy is seeking a Senior Teaching Laboratory Technician with the knowledge, practical skill and management ability to support the delivery of a high-quality student experience in our teaching laboratories. The successful candidate will be able to provide effective and efficient technical support in Physics & Astronomy undergraduate teaching laboratories through the design, set-up, maintenance, testing and demonstration of laboratory experiments. The role involves specialist support and managing the running of the laboratories, maintaining and updating experiments as required. This also includes demonstrating to students and staff, and good understanding of physics and experimental method is advantageous. Working independently or with minimum levels of direct supervision is important, as is being able to ask for help when it’s needed. Good communication skills and team work are essential.

Hands on working, guiding students to reach their potential will be at the heart of what you do. During the teaching term, you will ensure the experiments are running smoothly and help the students understand how to get the most out of them. Term breaks are a great time to get “stuck in”, take model data, design and improve experiments or the lab environment following your passion and interests to further improve the learning experience of our students. You will be passionate about education as well as you will be adept at communicating to a diverse range of individuals from varying backgrounds, ensuring that inclusivity is part of everything you do.
