We are seeking a motivated and collaborative individual to join our team as a Research Assistant in Mass Spectrometry‑based Metabolomics. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to an ASAP‑funded international research project investigating seeded aggregation of alpha‑synuclein in Parkinson’s disease and related synucleinopathies. You will work within a dynamic and inclusive research environment at the Michael Barber Centre for Collaborative Mass Spectrometry, part of the Manchester Institute of Biotechnology.

This is a full‑time, fixed‑term role for 36 months, starting as soon as possible and running until 31st May 2029 (unless extended).

You will be responsible for:

  • Supporting receipt, logging, storage and tracking of biological samples
  • Preparing biological samples for mass spectrometry‑based metabolomics and lipidomics analysis
  • Assisting with LC‑MS, MS/MS and ion‑mobility mass spectrometry workflows under supervision
  • Operating, monitoring and maintaining mass spectrometry and chromatography equipment appropriate to training level
  • Maintaining accurate laboratory records, data organisation and quality control documentation

We welcome candidates who bring diverse perspectives, experiences, and approaches to their work.

About you

We encourage applications from individuals with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. You should demonstrate:

Essential criteria:

  • A degree, or equivalent experience, in chemistry, analytical chemistry, biochemistry, biomedical science or a related discipline
  • Practical laboratory experience in analytical science or biological sample preparation

  • Experience working in a shared instrumentation facility or multidisciplinary environment
  • Interest in neurodegeneration, Parkinson’s disease or biomedical mass spectrometry

We value reliability, care in laboratory practice and willingness to learn as much as formal experience.

  • Christmas closure in addition to annual leave and bank holidays
  • Purple Place employee discount platform
