About us

UCL is a world-leading university and a diverse global community of academics, students, industry partners and alumni. Ranked among the UK’s leading institutions for research strength, UCL brings together expertise across disciplines to address real-world challenges through research, education and innovation.

The Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering (CEGE) has over two centuries of experience addressing complex societal and environmental challenges through research and teaching. Based in Bloomsbury, CEGE offers extensive laboratory and workshop facilities and works collaboratively across disciplines and with external partners to deliver impactful research and education.

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Advanced Innovative Materials Laboratory and play a central role in supporting research and teaching in concrete and cementitious materials. Working closely with academics, students, researchers and industry partners, you will provide practical technical expertise across a wide range of laboratory activities.

The role is highly hands-on and includes preparing, mixing and casting concrete specimens, operating and demonstrating specialist testing equipment, and supporting experimental work and laboratory activities. You will contribute to testing of fresh and hardened concrete and cement materials and assist with the development and delivery of experimental setups.

You will also help maintain the effective day-to-day operation of the laboratory through equipment servicing, calibration and repair, materials management, logistics coordination, and maintaining a safe and well-organised working environment. Health and safety is a key part of the role, including supporting safe systems of work, risk assessments and laboratory best practice.

This role would suit someone who enjoys practical problem solving, laboratory operations and enabling high-quality research and teaching outcomes.

About you

You will bring experience of working in a concrete laboratory environment in either higher education or industry, with practical knowledge of concrete and cement materials, testing methods and laboratory processes. You will be confident operating laboratory equipment, preparing materials and supporting experimental activity safely and effectively.

You will be organised, proactive and able to manage competing priorities while working collaboratively with colleagues and supporting students and researchers. Experience of supporting safe and effective laboratory operations, contributing to health and safety, and developing technical expertise will be important.
