The University of London
The University of London is both the UK’s largest provider of international distance and online learning and the convenor of a federation of 17 renowned higher education institutions.
The federation brings together more than 250,000 learners and 50,000 staff in a collaborative community that is delivering high-quality research and education across all disciplines.
Since 1858, we have expanded access to world-class higher education. Today, around 40,000 students in more than 190 countries are part of our global learning community.
The University is also home to the School of Advanced Study, which has a national role in championing research, teaching and public engagement in the humanities and social sciences. Through its institutes, libraries, special collections and archives, and the University of London Press, it fosters communities of researchers, scholars and practitioners who are change-makers and committed to making a difference in people’s lives.
The Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies, and the School of Advanced Study
The Institute of Languages, Cultures and Societies (ILCS) is the national centre for research in the disciplinary field of languages, cultures and societies. We work closely with creative practitioners, cultural organisations, and subject associations to strengthen the position of the subject area in the educational sector and in society as a whole.
Through seminar series, conferences, workshops, author readings, visiting fellowship programmes, training events as well as through our book series Understanding Languages, Cultures and Societies (UoL Press) and the intercollegiate MA in Languages and Cultures Across Borders, we promote and support multilingual and transcultural enquiry.
Though our strengths reside primarily within the fields of French and Francophone, German, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, and Latin American/Caribbean studies, ILCS supports the transnational study of languages and cultures in other global contexts. Our staff’s expertise bridges literary, historical, ethnographic, and digital research, with a particular emphasis on postcolonial and migration studies, and the environmental humanities.
