Flexible Working
The School of Modern Languages and Cultures is implementing an ambitious strategic refresh that repositions SMLC as a national centre of excellence at the intersection of languages, cultures, AI, and digital technologies. Central to this is an Innovation Portfolio, a coordinated programme of curriculum development, research, and partnership activity that will shape the School’s offer as the discipline continues to evolve.
This post is an integral part of that portfolio. The post holder will join a collaborative team developing the proposals that will define SMLC’s new programme landscape, working with partners across the School, the Faculty of Arts, and the University. Colleagues with enthusiasm for developing new skills and ideas are actively welcomed into this process, and the portfolio is designed to grow from within the School's existing community as much as from new appointments.
The post holder will contribute to existing provision while playing an active role in developing new programmes and modules within the Innovation Portfolio.
The School is investing in new areas at the intersection of languages, AI, and digital technologies, and this post is central to that ambition. At a time of significant change for Modern Languages in the UK, this post offers an opportunity to help shape what the discipline looks like at one of its leading institutions. We are looking for a scholar with a research profile that engages seriously with language technologies, AI, data science, or digital communication, and who can bring that expertise to bear on a curriculum that is expanding into new areas and new student communities.
About You
We welcome applications from candidates working in any discipline whose work engages with how communication works across languages, modes, and communities.
Relevant areas of specialisation include:
Multilingual competence is essential, whether or not you hold a formal qualification in languages.
A strong research record or compelling research potential, and evidence of the capacity to work across disciplinary and institutional boundaries, are equally important.
Experience of HE teaching is expected. We are actively seeking to diversify the disciplinary profile of SMLC and encourage applications from candidates who may not have considered a Modern Languages School as their natural home.
