We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic Cover Supervisor to join our Basford campus in the Construction faculty. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in maintaining a positive learning environment in the absence of a lecturer.

The a full time role (37 hours per week), working term time only, 37 weeks per year.

About the Role

We are seeking a adaptable Cover Supervisor to join our Construction Faculty at Basford College. This unique role is perfect for someone with practical skills or hands-on experience in construction who wants to contribute to developing future construction professionals in a supportive and guided capacity.

As a Cover Supervisor, you will:

  • Step in to cover lessons for teaching staff when required, ensuring students stay engaged and on track on a pre-set learning activity.
  • Explain and respond to students about what is required and what pre-prepared task/exercise they will be expected to undertake.
  • Manage behaviour of students to ensure that a constructive learning environment is maintained by using a range of strategies to deal with classroom behaviour as a whole and also individual behavioural needs. This will include meeting and communicating with parents as required.
  • Support the curriculum team with the pastoral support of students within the designated faculty area
  • Support the curriculum team with monitoring and proactively act on attendance issues for cover lessons and those taught within the designated faculty area; liaise with parents/ carers/ guardians where concerns arise around poor attendance.
  • Where required, support with tutor group sessions and small group interventions to identify students' needs and provide appropriate guidance and support, referring to specialists and other staff as appropriate
  • Assist lecturing staff in lesson planning, evaluating and adjusting lesson/work plans as appropriate.
  • Provide practical insights, guidance, and demonstrations to inspire and motivate learners.

What We’re Looking For

We’re not looking for formal teaching qualifications (although they’re of course a plus if you have them!) – we’re looking for someone with:

  • Hands-on experience or practical skills in construction. Whether you’re a builder, carpenter, plumber, or another tradesperson, your expertise will be highly valued.
  • A genuine passion for supporting and inspiring young people.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills to manage diverse tasks.
  • A positive, can-do attitude and the ability to adapt to a variety of situations.
  • Level 2 Maths and English or equivalent
  • A respectful and inclusive attitude to students and colleagues
  • Level 5 relevant qualification (degree or vocational) - desirable
  • Experience of providing pastoral support to students and the ability to handle complex and sensitive issues with empathy and understanding - desirable
