Technical Manager (Hydra)

Canterbury Christ Church University – Hydra Suite

Canterbury Christ Church University is seeking an experienced and proactive Technical Manager (Hydra) to lead the operation, development and promotion of the Hydra Simulation Suite. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in supporting innovative teaching, research and knowledge exchange activities through the effective management of a specialist simulation environment.

About the Role

As Technical Manager (Hydra), you will be responsible for the day-to-day management and strategic development of the Hydra Suite, ensuring that facilities, equipment and technical services are delivered to the highest standards. Working closely with academic colleagues, technical staff and students, you will support the delivery of simulation-based learning and research activities while promoting the wider use of the facility across the University and with external partners.

Key responsibilities:

  • Coordinating technical support for teaching, research and knowledge exchange activities within the Hydra Suite.
  • Managing the day-to-day operation of the Hydra Suite and ensuring the effective maintenance, repair and replacement of specialist simulation equipment.
  • Working collaboratively with academic, timetabling and administrative colleagues to plan and deliver practical teaching activities.
  • Providing specialist advice and technical expertise to support the development of teaching materials, practical classes and research projects.
  • Leading the promotion and development of the Hydra Suite, identifying opportunities to expand its use and support innovative practices.
  • Supporting, training and guiding staff, students and other users in the effective use of simulation facilities and equipment.
  • Developing, reviewing and implementing risk assessments, standard operating procedures and operational guidance.
  • Providing leadership, direction and prioritisation for technical activities, ensuring resources are deployed effectively to meet service demands.
  • Contributing to the continuous improvement of technical services, facilities and operational processes.

Associate fellowship/fellowship of the Higher Education Academy is desirable but not essential.

About You

We are looking for a highly organised and motivated individual with:

  • Significant experience in a similar technical management or specialist technical support role.
  • Strong knowledge and practical experience of Hydra simulation systems and their application within teaching, research or professional practice environments.
  • Experience of managing technical services, resources or facilities within a complex operational environment.
  • Excellent organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities, projects and deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across a wide range of stakeholder groups.
  • Experience of delivering training, guidance and support to students, colleagues and other users.
  • The ability to work independently, exercise sound judgement and make informed decisions in a dynamic environment.
  • A proactive, solution-focused approach with a commitment to continuous improvement and service excellence.
  • Experience of working within higher education or a similar educational environment is desirable.

Experience within higher education, membership of a relevant professional body and recognition through the Higher Education Academy are desirable.
