About the Role

The Department of Classics and Ancient History seeks to appoint a Teaching Fellow for a fixed-term period of three years from 1 September 2026 to 31 August 2029, at 1.0FTE in year one and then 0.8FTE in years two and three.
The purpose of this post is to provide teaching in Beginners and Intermediate intensive accelerated Latin language, convening and lecturing the year one undergraduate ‘Encounters with Latin Texts’ module (taught in translation), undergraduate dissertation supervision, and pastoral and administrative cover.
In year one, it also requires module convening and some lecturing for the year one undergraduate module ‘Ancient Thought: Philosophy, Politics, Science’.
The role requires a research specialism in Greek and/or Latin language and literature, and the ability to teach and support student learning in the areas identified.
About You
You will teach Latin language levels 1 and 2 (beginners’ to intermediate accelerated), within the department’s structure of and rationale for language-learning.
You will teach the Y1 undergraduate ‘Encounters with Latin Texts’ module (in translation).
You will also supervise some final-year dissertations in relevant areas.
In year one, you will also convene and offer some lectures for the year one undergraduate module ‘Ancient Thought: Philosophy, Politics, Science’.
You will undertake some administrative duties within the Department as required, as well as pastoral duties including personal tutoring.
You will mark exams and assessed work as required. You will need experience in classroom teaching, as well as in marking, supervising, and offering constructive feedback.
This is an excellent opportunity for a candidate with existing teaching experience to expand their experience within a supportive department, with undergraduates from a wide variety of backgrounds. You will devise your own teaching materials within the scope of the current prescriptions for these modules.
You will be involved in many aspects of the departmental life, tracking students’ progress, participating in staff meetings and Open Days, and assisting in our engagement work with local schools and the wider public. You will also have the opportunity to gain experience in academic administrative roles by acting as personal tutor to students, and through undertaking administrative duties, as reasonably requested by the Head of Department.
