Lecturer in Fashion Contexts (12 Months FTC Maternity Leave)

We are seeking a Lecturer in Fashion Contexts to join our team who will contribute to the students' educational journey, bringing their experience to inspire the next generation of fashion talent. We seek academics with expertise exploring the cultural, historical, and critical dimensions of fashion, including but not limited to: fashion theory, visual culture, identity, sustainability, and global perspectives. It would also be advantageous to have a background in fashion design. 

As a Lecturer in Fashion Contexts, you will contribute to teaching and the student experience across a range of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. You should have expertise in the cultural, historical, and critical dimensions of fashion, including but not limited to: fashion theory, visual culture, identity, sustainability, and global perspectives. You will demonstrate experience in delivering engaging lectures, seminars, and workshops that support the development of critical thinking, contextual awareness, and academic writing skills.

You will contribute to curriculum development, assessment, and the delivery of high-quality teaching that connects theoretical frameworks to contemporary fashion practice and wider social, political, and environmental issues. The ability to integrate interdisciplinary approaches and current debates into teaching is highly desirable.

Knowledge and/or experience of applying theory to creative practice would be advantageous, and a background in fashion design may support this. You may also contribute to practice-based modules and provide pastoral support to students.

Your experience does not need to be exclusively within fashion, although you should be able to demonstrate how your expertise can be applied effectively within a fashion contexts discipline.

You will also be expected to contribute to the research and/or knowledge exchange activities of the department for example by producing high quality research outputs, supervising PGR students, and developing funding bids OR demonstrate an interest in developing expertise and innovation in the delivery of teaching and/or student experience.

Essential Skills:

• A good first degree in a relevant discipline, together with either postgraduate qualification(s), equivalent professional experience, or evidence of professional practice and/or scholarly contribution relevant to the role.
• A PGCE, Certificate of Education, PGCLTHE or membership of the Higher Education Academy (or commitment to obtain within three years of appointment).
• Expertise within fashion contexts: cultural, historical, and critical dimensions of fashion, including but not limited to: fashion theory, visual culture, identity, sustainability, and global perspectives.

Desirable:

• Knowledge and/or experience of applying theory to creative practice would be advantageous, and a background in fashion design may support this.
